    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Certificate 10 welding supervisor?

A Certificate 10 welding supervisor is a professional who has completed the AS 1796 Certificate 10 Welding Supervisor—a recognised qualification in Australia that certifies you to supervise welding operations and ensure they meet required standards.

This qualification confirms you have the knowledge and responsibility to:

    • Oversee welders and fabrication teams
    • Ensure compliance with Australian standards such as AS/NZS 5131 and AS/NZS ISO 3834
    • Interpret welding procedures and specifications (WPS)
    • Manage weld quality, inspections, and documentation
    • Coordinate welding activities across projects

In practical terms, a Certificate 10 welding supervisor sits between the workshop floor and engineering/management teams—making sure welding work is done correctly, safely, and to code.

This qualification is commonly pursued by:

    • Experienced welders moving into leadership roles
    • Supervisors in fabrication or construction
    • Engineers responsible for welded structures or pressure equipment

Because the qualification is industry-recognised, it’s often required for projects involving structural steel, mining, defence, and pressure equipment across Australia.

How long does a welding supervisor course take?

The duration of a welding supervisor course depends on the pathway you take, your experience, and how the training is delivered.

For the AS 1796 Certificate 10 Welding Supervisor, most participants complete the course in:

    Typical Timeframes

8 to 16 weeks – common for structured or part-time study
4 to 8 weeks – possible if you already have strong welding or engineering experience
Longer (3–6 months) – if studying at a slower pace alongside full-time work

    What Affects the Duration?

Your background (welder vs engineer vs beginner)
Study mode (online flexible vs classroom-based)
Assessment readiness (experience with weld procedures, standards, QA)
Availability for study (full-time vs part-time)

    Online Courses Are Faster

With flexible online delivery (like AWS CE’s model), you can:

    • Study at your own pace
    • Skip over content you already understand
    • Focus on assessment preparation

This often significantly reduces overall time compared to traditional classroom courses.

     Bottom Line

Most people complete a welding supervisor course in 2 to 4 months, but experienced professionals can finish much faster with a flexible, online approach.

    Is AS1796 industry recognised?

Yes — AS 1796 Certificate 10 Welding Supervisor is recognised in industry across Australia.

It is a certification issued under an Australian Standard (AS 1796) and is widely accepted across industries that require welding supervision, including structural steel, pressure equipment, mining, and defence projects.

    What “industry recognised” means here
    • Recognised by employers across all Australian states and territories
    • Aligned with key standards like AS/NZS 5131 and AS/NZS ISO 3834
    • Often specified or preferred for compliance roles involving welding supervision

AS 1796 is industry-recognised, but is not an AQF qualification, i.e., it is not a ‘nationally accredited qualification’.

    That means:

It does not issue a formal AQF certificate like a Certificate IV or Diploma. But it is highly valued in industry and frequently required on real projects

    Bottom line

AS 1796 is one of the most recognised and respected welding supervisor certifications in Australia, especially for roles focused on compliance, quality, and supervision of welded work.

Can I study a welding supervisor course online?

Yes — you can study a welding supervisor course online, especially the theory components of programs like the AS 1796 Certificate 10 Welding Supervisor.

How online welding supervisor courses work

Most reputable providers (including AWS CE) deliver the course using a blended model:

    • Online theory (major component)
Study welding standards, procedures, compliance, and quality management at your own pace
    • Practical / assessment component
      Completed via:
      • workplace evidence
      • assessment workshops
      • or approved practical evaluation
    • What you can study online.
You can complete topics such as:
      • Welding standards and compliance
      • Weld procedures (WPS) and documentation
      • Inspection and quality control
      • Coordination of welding activities
    • Benefits of studying online
      • Study anytime, anywhere
      • Minimal disruption to work
      • Faster completion if experienced
      • Ideal for regional or remote students
    • What to watch out for
      • Fully “100% online with no assessment” courses are a red flag
      • Legitimate courses still require competency assessment to meet industry expectations
    Bottom line

Yes — you can study most of a welding supervisor course online, and it’s often the fastest and most flexible pathway, but you’ll still need to complete some form of practical or competency-based assessment to gain certification.
