Finding skilled welders is tough.

Keeping productivity high while training staff is even tougher.

The Job Ready Basic MIG Welding Course from AWS Centre of Excellence is designed specifically to help employers upskill labourers, trade assistants, and early-career workers — without pulling them off the job for weeks at a time.

This program delivers consistent, job-ready MIG welding capability using a blended online + practical assessment model that works around your operations.

Online Theory. Practical Skills. Minimal Downtime.

Online Theory (Approx. 5 hours)

Your workers complete the theory 100% online, at their own pace, outside of peak production hours.
This ensures everyone receives the same baseline knowledge, covering:

  • MIG welding fundamentals and safety
  • Equipment, consumables, and machine setup
  • Understanding machine functions and weld behaviour
  • Correct torch angles, travel speed, and bead control
  • GMAW braze welding principles
  • Operating and basic maintenance practices

Each module includes short quizzes, helping confirm understanding before practical assessment.

Practical Assessment – Workshop or On-Site

Once the theory is completed, workers undertake a 3-hour practical assessment, completed either:

  • At AWS CE’s Melrose Park, South Australia workshop, or
  • On-site at your workplace (by arrangement)

Assessment focuses on real welds used in industry, including:

  • Safe machine setup and documentation
  • Beads and pad welds
  • Butt welds (1.6mm, 3.0mm, 5.0mm – 1G)
  • Fillet welds (1G and 1F)
  • Outside corner and lap welds

This allows you to verify actual capability, not just attendance.

Additional workshop time can also be purchased.
